A truly unique place in the middle of nowhere that few people ever visit. Located in the Atlantic Ocean about 8 degrees south of the equator, right between Brazil and West Africa, Ascension is a single volcanic island that forms part of Great Britain’s remaining colonial vestiges. It has a British and an American military base, one hotel, two shops, three bars and about 15 km of paved roads. And roughly 800 friendly inhabitants, most of whom hail from the neighboring island of Saint Helena. It’s an awesome place to visit because there are plenty of hiking opportunities, all with well marked trails and some fascinating opportunities for exploration in a unique environment. And all that without any crowds, without mosquitoes, without digital pollution (no cell phone coverage here), but with plenty of sun and peace. The perfect place to get away from it all and explore!
