This area is off the radar of most scramblers and peak baggers. It forms part of the huge Bighorn Wilderness area and includes the Public Land Use Zones (PLUZ) of Upper Clearwater, Kiska, and Ram. For the sake of convenience I’ve included the Front Range peaks east of Nordegg as well. The area borders Banff National Park in the west, the Ya Ha Tinda area in the south, and the Siffleur Wilderness area and David Thompson area in the north.
There is very little beta on hiking and climbing for this area, so the potential to explore and have some real adventures is huge. I’ve only done a few trips here but can’t wait to come back and see more!

Eagle Mountain, featured in The David Thompson Highway Hiking Guide by Jane Ross and Daniel Kyba, appears to be an exception to this rule. Although it was a Monday when […]
Falls Lookout31 May 2017 Solo This trip had several pleasant surprises in store for me. The peak is unnamed on all of the maps I had consulted during the planning stage, so I was puzzled to discover several buildings at its summit when I was hiking in the valley below on my way to Onion Peak the […]
Onion Peak30 May 2017 Solo Not to be confused with “The Onion” on the Icefields Parkway in Banff, Onion Peak is a relatively minor summit along the Front Ranges of the Ram Range west of Rocky Mountain House. I had never been to this area and wanted to check it out during a spell of gorgeous […]
Ram Mountain2 February 2017 With Trevor Winter ridge walks can hardly get better than this. Ram Mountain combines the magical scenery of winter wonderland on a long, undulating ridge with gorgeous views of the Front Ranges over a green sea of rolling foothills. It’s a solitary mountain island sticking out in front of the main range, just […]
